Mead Journal: Pumpkin Mead
Oct. 9th, 2008 02:20 pmWell, I have 2 pumpkin pie pumpkins that I de-seaded, peeled and chopped. Got a lot.
If you ever have homade, from scratch pumpkin pie where they made it from the raw pumpkin, be impressed. God that was hard to peel and chop up. I mead it was the consistancy of a hard carrot or rather more dense. The rind is much thicker than potatos and a bit tough to get off, I think I may have damaged my peeler.
I plan on pureeing the diced up then setting it to sit in some Pectin Acid to break apart the cel walls. Then into a mesh bag. The Whole cracked nutmeg and 2 small cinamon sticks will go into a diffrent mesh bag when I rack the whole mess. I expect about 1 1/2 gallons of puree. I know, not much juice there but sounds good. I am considering putting in a tablespoon of brown sugar just for some extra sweetness and a taste of it. I believe that they put Brown sugar in Pumpkin Pie. Also I am going to put 1/2 a vanilla bean in with the nutmeg and cinamon. It should turn out very good.
Thinking on calling the batch "Hagrid's Private Stash" In honor of Harry Potter's friend that tends the pumpkin patches in a very popular set of books. I was originally going to call it something like "The Great Pumpkin" after the Peanut's character Linus and his belief in the great pumpkin sort of like a santa claus figure or something similar like "Linus's folly". I like "Hagrid's Private Stash" better. Sort of gives the guy a bit of a twist as to what he does with all those pumpkins besides make pumpkin juice for Hogwarts to enjoy. I mean wouldn't the teachers like some alcohol too.
Ah, well. Should go into the carboy tonight. If I can get the time.
