Odd observations.

Just an interesting observation.  I see many copies of the Last Harry Potter book lately.  In each case the owners have removed the slip case and opted to read it with out that on.  Was the cover so abhorent?  The book's yellow and tan inner cover and thickness is distinctive.  No less that 8 copies seen in my normal daily life on Monday and on Tuesday there was about a dozen.  I only saw 3 on Saturday/Sunday due to the newness of the book and not being out and abouts much.  But all in all considering the limited number of people one crosses paths with it is an impressive showing and telling on how popular the modern-esk fantasy series is.

I didn't take mine off. As a matter of fact, the cover is there to prevent damage to the book. Thus, the cover stays on.

I have seen a great many people take the cover off. Like you, I can't see the reason why (unless they feel as though they're reading a lemon).

I've also known a great many people who've ripped out the epilogue, marked over it with sharpie, or otherwise blotted it from existence. Once you've read it, you'll understand, and that lemon comment may make more sense.

off topic

Some people may be taking the cover off to protect the art work on the cover.

I've done that for a different book and series.

Though usually, I'll tape the cover down so it doesn't slide.

I always take off the dust cover

I have a great tendency to rip dust covers, so I immediately take it off when reading a book. Sometimes I put it back on, sometimes I forget. As anyone who sees my library, there is a stack of dust covers, just waiting to be put back on the correct book.
